These swans know they have a captive audience, but I am always delighted to see them. If they ever spot an open side hatch or someone with a bite to eat then they will come to see if they can join your feast! The swans are very sociable and will come close… but may snap a little so do feed with caution! As with all birds they will eat anything, but foods resembling their natural diet of fish and plant life are best.

Each year, at about this time the young adult swans with their grey beaks and still a few grey feathers are learning to fly. There is always much excitement as the adults demonstrate along the canal and the cygnets copy and try to get airborne.

If you are cruising with us this autumn, or happen to be by the canal and spot the flight school I’d love to see your photographs. Please email me in the office.
